A therapy modality in its own right

Cupping therapy might be trendy now, but it’s not new. It dates back to ancient Egyptian, Chinese, and Middle Eastern cultures. Eber's papyrus (1550 BC) from Ancient Egypt is one of the oldest medical texts to mention cupping therapy. Cupping therapy is part of numerous ancient healing systems, such as Chinese, Unani, traditional Korean, Tibetan, and Oriental medicine. The ancient Greek physician Hippocrates compiled extensive descriptions of the cupping application. He described two different types of cups: one with a narrow opening and a long handle and the other with a wider opening. The first type was used to treat deep accumulation of fluids, while the second type was used to treat the spread of pain.

Neck, spine and nerves

Cupping therapy on it's own can effectively help in many conditions, personally it's my to go to modality for sciatic nerve, lower back pain, degenerative disc and nerve impingement. When combined with acupuncture the effect is doubled.

Detox from heavy metals, toxins and aging blood cells

In addition to the musculoskeletal conditions mentioned above cupping is an excellent therapy modality to detox the body from heavy metals (see article on, toxins, aging and damaged blood cells. Per modern medicine the life span of red blood cells is 120 days (click here) after which they are buried in the Liver and Spleen but with the fast pace life style, stress, poor food quality and diet of today the liver and spleen might not cope as expected and that's where cupping comes in as the only answer to rid the body of this excess.

Cupping is done on specific areas behind the neck C7 area, upper back by scapular area and preferably on specific dates which your practitioner will inform you off.  These areas act as back gates to the organs in the body. In Chinese medicine these points are called back shu points they are zones along the back considered to be gates providing direct access to internal organs. Cupping those areas specifically in the 2nd half of the lunar month (17th - 27th) is effective in restoring balance to those organs, there is no equivalent to cupping in ridding the body from the accumulation of toxins and harmful substances that circulate in the blood day in day out.
